About The Israeli/Palestinian Conflict
The conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Israeli (or Zionist) Jews dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. For one thing, the two groups have different religions. Most Palestinians are Muslims or Christians, while Israeli Jews follow Judaism. However, the conflict is really a fight over land. From the end of World War I until 1948, the area that both groups claim as theirs was called Palestine. That same name was also used to refer to a general region called the “Holy Land” by the three monotheistic religions--Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. After the war of 1948–1949, this land (which in only about the size of Maryland) was divided into three parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank (of the Jordan River) and the Gaza Strip.
